The ability to speak English confers prestige in Italy, and therefore there’s often no shortage of people wiling to show off their knowledge. However, even in the main cities and resorts you’ll need to at least use some Italian, and in the more remote areas you may find no one speaks English at all. Therefore even a small knowledge of some key Italian words and phrases is useful and would be likely to make any trip to Italy more enjoyable.
